Author bio:
I used to write a lot, then my hard drive died and then I had kids. But thanks to a wonderful hubby I got my hard drive back, or at least all the stories and tidbits of writing I had stored on it. So here I am. I've been back at writing since 2009, thanks to a portable laptop (a gift from my wonderful hubby) and a website called Protagonize
In fact it was a friend from Protagonize, who dragged me into NaNo for the first time in 2010. And though I was luke warm then, I've now learned how it works and I'm hooked! Here's what helps me:
1) Lock up the inner editor tight and through away the key until that book is done! This means
- no looking back, no backspacing, nada - pretend you're using ink on paper
- no worrying if something fits or you're going off on a tangent
- write notes inside the document [in brackets, or highlighted] - adds to word count and captures the above questions where they need to be thought about.
2) If you have to break, write a sentence or two of where you're going with what you've written before stopping.
- I had a lot of "Chapter X (in which so and so does such and such on their way to somewhere.)"
- I found this was extremely helpful in getting back into the flow, without having to re-read anything I wrote.
3) Do write ins!
- The sound of many people typing furiously at once is inspiring
- Word wars do amazing things for count (even if they leave hilariously odd sentences)
But above all: HAVE FUN! *grins*
*giggles and grins*
