6 months agoPep Talk from Maggie Stiefvater
Here’s how I fight time:
1.Know my project. I need to know what I want that final project to look like. Where it sits on the shelf, why I’m writing it, how it will make the reader feel. Then I ask myself with each chapter: does this belong in the book I said I was writing?
2.Never sit at my computer without knowing what I’m going to write. If I’m stuck, I need to stimulate my physical body so my mind can play: drive, walk, shower.
3.Unwind each day with thirty minutes of reading something that feels like what I’m trying to make, to remind myself how others accomplished it.
4.[brackets]. If I know I need a beat but can’t quite get the details yet, I place brackets around the words [fight here] or [scene], so that I know I can go back and fix it later.
5.Move forward and backward. I go back and edit; I go forward and outline. Rereading and scanning ahead helps me keep #1 in mind.
6.Ignore word count. I get through the plot first, then I go back and flesh out or cut down as needed.
Now get to work. Time’s not on your side, but everything else is. Remember, you were built to overcome the impossible. And at least it’s not a bear.
6 months agoGOOD SATURDAY MORNING PEOPLE.
Ok, had to get that out of the way. Its way too early for shouty caps.
Its a new day. Let's plod, type, tarry, carry on, chase the dawn, and in general Write today.
One word is one word more than yesterday.
Or maybe it's the one word you needed to inspire a 1000!
6 months agoSWS VIRUS ---VERY CONTAGIOUS
SECOND WEEK SLUMP
It's official, the Nano- Virus has struck the Moses Lake Region. The Letters of Light Offices have given us a Guide of Symptoms to Look out for as we wade our way through the next perilous weeks ahead.
The flu like symptoms can last up to a week or longer, generally lasting until December 1st. To help remember you are not alone. There are many others infected. A full recovery can be made with just a few quick remedies,
GET OFF FACEBOOK AND WRITE
(Unless you’re sprinting!)
TRY WRITING A DIFFERENT SCENE/ POV
JUST 10 MINUTES A DAY
QUIT COUNTING THE WORDS
REMEMBER TO REWARD YOURSELF… I know it may seem crazy, we aren’t done yet, but think of all we have accomplished so far. Don’t get yourself done on what is left, or how many words are to be written or where someone else is at.
FOCUS ON YOUR STORY. WRITE YOUR STORY, AND THE WORD COUNT WILL FIND ITS WAY TO 50K

7 months agoREGARDING THE KICKOFF
For anyone concerned about the 5pm start time, please remember that social time has been allotted at the beginning of the evening. I expect there to be schedule conflicts, traffic, and other hiccups that will prevent people from arriving on the hour. Ideally, we will be starting icebreakers and writing games at 5:30, and then get down to business by 5:30- 5:45. If you feel worried about being late...DON'T BE! A late Nano is better than none.

HASTINGS 5 CLOSE, NOV11/30
Don't give up, I know its down to the wire and it seems overwhelming. We are all feeling the pressure. Its okay, take a deep breath and refocus. Try not looking at the word count as a demon, try looking at it as a reverse countdown. Make it fun. Set small goals to reach.
And for those of you who maybe won't make it to 50K. STILL KEEP WRITING. Don't give up in the final days and then kick yourself later. Keep it up, suffer through, give it your best shot. Know that you tried your hardest and succeed or fail be proud of what you have accomplished.
