It's September! That means it's time to dust off your thinking caps and get ready for NaNoWriMo Prep!

This year, we are hosting FOUR prep sessions throughout Orange County. Whether this is your first novel, or your fifteenth, we invite you to come meet other Wrimos and pick up some tips and strategies for writing a novel in 30 days.

You can find more information on our calendar and in the forums below, but here are the prep dates:

Huntington Beach Library: Monday, October 8th and Monday, October 22nd
1888 Center (Orange): Thursday, October 11th and Thursday, October 25th

Don't forget to save the date for our kickoff party! This year, Kickoff will be at the Orange Public Library on October 20th. More details to come!

Want to host your own write-in? We encourage ALL Wrimos, new and experienced, to meet up with others around the county! It's simple! All you have to do is pick a time and location, and we will add it to the calendar! It helps to create a forum thread for your write-in with details so others will know how to find you. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask in the forums or message one of the MLs privately.

Don't forget about our digital presence! You can find many other Wrimos here in these forums, but you can also find us on Facebook! We have a very active and encouraging Facebook group that helps us stay connected through November and throughout the year. Find the link in the "Links" section to your right.

~~~~~~~~~~IT IS SUMMER CAMP TIME~~~~~~~~~
Make a project. Join a cabin. Do the writing thing.
7 months ago
Every April and July Head Office hosts mini-NaNo months with a Summer Camp theme. These events will mostly be online and the goal setting is flexible so these months are a little less intense than November but still very rewarding.
ML Eddie for one will be going for another complete novel during Camp and you are welcome to write along. We will continue to hold our weekly write-ins as listed on the calendar and you may find one or two in-person things popping up.
As the chill December winds blow, our hero removes their mask, hangs up their cape, and curls up by the fire with a mug of hot cocoa…
Congratulations, North Orange County Wrimos! November has come to a close, and we’ve done some amazing things this year. Let me throw some numbers at you. This year we had 505 active writers in our region, and of those, a whopping 133 writers crossed the 50k milestone. We wrote a collective 7,531,142 words and our average word count per writer was 19,561 words.
If you wrote with us this month, no matter how much you wrote, congratulate yourself! You faced off against a slew of villains—procrastination, self-doubt, overcaffeination—and prevailed. Great job!
As ML Eddie and I assess the great things that happened this month, we have a favor to ask you: we want your feedback on the events we put on this November. Every year, we try to host events that are fun, inspirational, productive, and just a little bit whacky, and we want to know if we succeeded. So please, take a moment to fill out our survey. We want to know what you liked, didn’t like, and how we can do better next year.
Access the survey here:
On one last note, I invite every writer to join us for our year-round write-ins! Whether you’re still hacking away at this manuscript, starting to revise it, or ready to move on to the next big thing, let us be there to support you. Participating in year-round groups helps establish good writing habits and also gives you a support network of fellow writers who are on the same writing journey.
Here is the current schedule of year-round write-ins:
Santa Ana Write-In
Sundays, 11 am – 2 pm
Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (near Mother’s Market)
2783 N. Main Street
Santa Ana, CA 92705
Barmy Drapers Writers Group
Mondays, 5:30 pm – 9 pm (Begins January 8)
Panera Bread
3988 Barranca Parkway
Irvine, CA 92606
Bodhi Leaf Write-In
Wednesdays, 9:30 am – 12 pm
Bodhi Leaf Coffee Traders
428 W. Katella Avenue
Orange, CA 92867
East Orange Starbucks Write-In
Wednesdays, 6 pm – 9 pm
Starbucks (across from El Modena)
3630 E Chapman Avenue
Orange, CA 92869
If you can’t make it to any of our in-person write-ins, stay in touch! While the forums often go quiet throughout the rest of the year, we’ll be active on other channels.
Thank you, everyone, for making this November super. Happy holidays and happy writing!
Thank God It's Over many people say. We in North Orange County (NOC) say THANK GOD IT CONTINUES! The push for 50k in a month may be over, but the writing, creative expression, and camaraderie we came to adore during November continue. Kick off the rest of your writing year by joining us at the TGIO - Now What? Party on Saturday. Then watch this space for a list of year-round writing groups you can join to keep the writerly goodness flowing!
To borrow a phrase from author and you tube star John Green - Don't Forget To Be Awesome!
We’re entering the final days of NaNoWriMo 2017. Many of our region’s writers have already crossed the 50k mark (some even 100k!), while many of us have fallen behind (myself included). No matter where you are in your writing journey, there are still plenty of write-ins to get some final words in!
Tuesday: Themed Write-Ins in Tustin
Wednesday: Bodhi Leaf Write-In in Orange, Orange Public Library “Plot Twist” Write-In
Thursday: Brea Whole Foods Write-In, 1888 Center Write-In
(See the regional calendar for more details:
We’ll also be having our TGIO Party this Saturday, December 2nd, at 10am at the Orange Public Library. This is a potluck party with special guest authors who will speak on what to do with your novel after NaNo ends. Don’t miss out!
Today is also Giving Tuesday. Donate through our Facebook page to help us receive a $50,000 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The match is available for only a limited time, so please act now:
Good luck on the final push!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*Final Push to the Finish Line~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
This is our last week. In a superhero story, this is the moment when the battered and beaten hero must choose - to lay down in defeat, or to stand one last time and fight for good. As novelists, this is our do or die moment. We must put butt in chair and hands on keyboards to defeat the inner-editor/super-villain that is trying to stop us. We have ELEVEN more write-ins to help you get there. Please come, join your side-kicks and battle through to the end! Personal victories and wordy glory await! You've got this Wordcrushers!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~Grand Californian~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~Downtown Disney~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
We meet in the main lobby at 4pm - we occupy any available couches and chairs or we sit by the two-sided fireplace either inside or out. We even can take up tables in the bar. We get comfy and write Disney style! ML Amber may have space in her car with parking access - check in the thread below for carpooling. Hope to see you there!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*TURKEY WEEK~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
There is a big fat turkey of a day in the middle of this week's writing, so write in schedules ar a little changed. Pay special attention to the calendar to make sure you don't miss a thing. If, like ML Eddie you have no local family and don't plan on cooking a feast, you will have extra hours for writing. If, like ML Amber, you have holiday plans - don't feel guilty about taking the day off. Or write before the gathering. Or after. Or hide in the bathroom and write during. And remember the best kind of Black Friday is the one that is inky black because of all the words!!! Happy Thanksgiving all - no matter how you celebrate!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*24 HOUR*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
This is the marathon write-in to beat all write-ins! Come for super intense wordage with a group of fellow strivers. We will power through! We will achieve phenomenal word-counts! We will eat junk food and make silly 3am jokes in our pajamas!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~WEEK THREE~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
It is meat and potatoes week. Get down to brass tacks week. Test the new superpowers in battle week. This is the time when our heroes find themselves and begin to understand their true purpose. Time to give your journey a deeper meaning and to acknowledge the lovely mess that writing a novel is. Picture the smackdown scene in a superhero story - the villain was more powerful than expected, your powers seem less magical when facing a strong evil, but something pulls at your center demanding that you GET UP! That you face your fears, that at the very least, you will die standing, unbowed. Can you see that face? The determined glint in the eye? The unwavering belief in right?
That is YOUR face, this is your moment! Write on, WriMos! Find your inner core of strength and stand up to face you novel. You've got this!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*WEEK TWO IS UPON US~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I need you all to take a moment and celebrate the fact that in one week we wrote TWO MILLION WORDS!! Way to go, WriMos! Now, we get ready for Week 2. This is where things can veer off course if we are not vigilant. It is easy to lose momentum as the bloom is off the rose and the hard work of writing becomes apparent. So here is the way I deal with it.
BRIBERY: If I write 100 more words I can have another chocolate.
PLAYFULNESS: Oh no, my character's Mom just walked in on him, while he was naked!
STUBBORNNESS: I WILL finish this section before I sleep!
COMMUNITY: If I go to a write-in I am sure to write just to keep from embarrassing myself.
Whatever method works for you - now is the time to employ it and Just Keep Writing!
******************************FINAL PUSH************************
It is hard to believe, but we are in the final four days of our crazy November Novel Madness. November 30th may be the final date you can validate your words and win NaNoWriMo but it is NOT the end of our writing adventures. Write to the end of your book. Write to find a new idea. Write to de-stress. Write to entertain. When it comes to the end Shepherd Book tells us 'It's how you get there's the worthier part. RIP Ron Glass and Long Live your Novel!!!
***********************WEEK 4 IS UPON US*************************
For many of us, this week has extra days off - YAY! For some, the family obligations rise up to fill all those extra hours - BOO! The only way to deal with both of these scenarios is WRITE! Whether you have the leisure to hit a coffee shop and write all day, or you have to perch on the toilet with your laptop whilst Uncle Raymond pounds on the door - WRITE! Take a page out of Malcolm Reynolds' book and AIM TO MISBEHAVE!!!
Lover's of the Firefly universe will never look at plastic dinosaurs again because of Holborn 'Wash' Washbourne. If you are a fan, you already know the scene of which I speak. If not, you need to watch this clip:
There are two lessons about story here. 1) Things ALWAYS do not always go to plan - this is why we read/watch/write stories - to see how it can all go wrong. 2) The parts where it goes wrong are the good parts! Trust this and keep writing!
One of the very interesting secondary characters in Joss Whedon's Firefly is Mister Universe - a combination of hacker and pirate radio broadcaster, Mister Universe states that 'You can't stop the signal'. He is right - stories push their way into the world through any chink they can find. Keep that signal flowing this week - come to write-ins, get up half an hour early to write, stay up late to work on it. Do whatever it takes, because YOU CAN'T STOP THE SIGNAL!
For today only you will get double the donor goodies at each level. For as little as $10 you can gift a halo to a friend. Locally we will honor your donation by gifting you DOUBLE raffle tickets - this means for every $10 donated you will receive $20 in tickets. Just print a copy of your receipt from today and bring it to your next write-in.
********************Wisdom for Writers*********************************
Here are a few nuggets of wisdom shared by Jeff Garvin today at our Novel Prep Meeting:
1) NaNo is a right of passage - it is supposed to be hard; embrace that.
2) Write into the void - it is OK to not know what it is all for.
3) Doubt does not decrease, fear does not flee. Just get on that bus and say 'Hello fear, hello doubt, we're writing now!'
4) There are only four things you must do in November: Sleep, Move, Eat, Write.
